A 22-year-old high school basketball coach, Igor Lukashevich, invited a student on his team, Sheila Rosenberg, and her boyfriend to his home late on a weekend night. At his home, Lukashevich drank vodka with the two minors. Shortly after leaving, the boyfriend, driving at 99 mph with a blood alcohol content of 0.175, crashed the car, killing both himself and Rosenberg, who had a BAC of 0.20. The Soap Lake School District had hired Lukashevich after he met the minimum state qualifications and passed state and federal background checks, which revealed no criminal history or other indicators of unfitness. The district had policies prohibiting student alcohol use, but the athletic director could not recall specifically reviewing them with Lukashevich. The coach had previously received permission to take the team for an off-campus pizza party. Rosenberg’s mother sued the school district, alleging vicarious liability and direct negligence in hiring, training, and supervision.
