Case Brief Summary & Legal Analysis
tl;dr: A wrestler won a court-ordered rematch for an Olympic spot. When a second, conflicting arbitration award favored his opponent, the court refused to confirm the second award, holding it was invalid because the arbitrator exceeded his authority by re-deciding an already settled issue.
Legal Significance: An arbitration award that purports to redetermine the merits of a previously decided claim, in violation of the governing arbitration rules, exceeds the arbitrator’s powers under the Federal Arbitration Act and is unenforceable, especially after a prior, conflicting award has been judicially confirmed.

Case Facts & Court Holding
Key Facts & Case Background
Matt Lindland and Keith Sieracki competed for a spot on the U.S. Olympic wrestling team. Sieracki won the first match. Lindland protested and, under the Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act, initiated arbitration. Arbitrator Burns found flaws in the grievance process and ordered a rematch, which Lindland won. USA Wrestling (USAW), the national governing body, refused to nominate Lindland. Lindland obtained a federal court order confirming the Burns Award. Meanwhile, Sieracki initiated a second arbitration to protest the Burns Award. The second arbitrator, Campbell, disagreed with Burns, upheld Sieracki’s initial victory, and directed USAW to ignore the rematch result. Sieracki then sought judicial confirmation of the Campbell Award. USAW and the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) initially followed the Campbell Award and nominated Sieracki, defying the court’s order confirming the Burns Award. The district court refused to confirm the Campbell Award and issued an injunction requiring the USOC to nominate Lindland. Sieracki appealed the refusal to confirm the Campbell Award, and the USOC appealed the injunction.
