tl;dr: A diabetic defendant claimed involuntary intoxication from insulin-induced hypoglycemia. The court held that hypoglycemia can be a basis for this defense, which is legally distinct from insanity, and remanded to determine if the defendant could present sufficient evidence to raise the defense at trial.

Legal Significance: Establishes that insulin-induced hypoglycemia can constitute the affirmative defense of involuntary intoxication. It clarifies the critical legal distinction between the complete defense of involuntary intoxication and the insanity defense, which have different elements, procedures, and consequences for the defendant.

Case Facts & Court Holding

Key Facts & Case Background

The defendant, Steve Garcia, an insulin-dependent diabetic, was charged with attempted murder and assault after attacking his wife. On the morning of the incident, Garcia injected a large dose of his prescribed insulin in anticipation of eating cake at a party later that day, but he did not eat anything thereafter. He subsequently struck his wife with a hammer and ran over her with a van. Before trial, Garcia sought to assert the affirmative defense of involuntary intoxication, arguing that his actions were caused by a state of hypoglycemia resulting from his insulin injection. The trial court ruled as a matter of law that evidence of hypoglycemia could not support an involuntary intoxication defense and was only admissible if Garcia entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. Compelled by this ruling, Garcia pleaded insanity to introduce evidence of his condition. The jury was instructed on the insanity defense but not on involuntary intoxication, and Garcia was convicted. The court of appeals reversed, and the Supreme Court of Colorado granted certiorari.
