Case Brief Summary & Legal Analysis
tl;dr: A grandfather promised his granddaughter money so she would not have to work. After she quit her job in reliance on the promise, the court enforced the promise against his estate, even without consideration, based on equitable estoppel.
Legal Significance: This is a foundational case for the doctrine of promissory estoppel, establishing that a promise may be enforced without consideration if the promisee detrimentally relies on it in a manner foreseeable to the promisor.

Case Facts & Court Holding
Key Facts & Case Background
John C. Ricketts, the decedent, gave his granddaughter, Katie Scothorn (plaintiff), a promissory note for $2,000 at 6% interest. Upon presenting the note, he told her, “I have fixed out something that you have not got to work any more,” and noted that none of his other grandchildren worked. Scothorn immediately quit her job as a bookkeeper, an action the court found to be a “reasonable and probable consequence” of her grandfather’s promise. The court determined there was no bargained-for exchange; Scothorn’s quitting was not a condition of the note, but a voluntary act in reliance upon it. The grandfather paid one year’s interest but died before paying the principal. His executor, Andrew D. Ricketts (defendant), refused to honor the note, arguing it was an unenforceable gratuitous promise that lacked consideration. Scothorn sued the estate to enforce the promise.
