Case Facts & Court Holding
Key Facts & Case Background
Detective Wojcik received information from a confidential informant (CI), a fellow gang member of defendant Willie E. Lloyd, that Lloyd, a known felon, possessed two handguns in his apartment. The CI provided detailed descriptions of the building, apartment location, and where Lloyd kept the guns, stating he had personally observed them the previous night. Wojcik corroborated the building’s description, and the CI identified Lloyd from a photo array. A records check confirmed Lloyd’s prior felony convictions. Based on Wojcik’s affidavit and the CI’s appearance before a Cook County Circuit Judge, a search warrant was issued for Lloyd’s person and apartment. During the execution of the warrant, officers observed Lloyd with a dark-colored firearm. Lloyd fled into a bedroom, and officers witnessed him throw a 9mm Ruger semi-automatic pistol out of a broken window. The firearm was recovered by officers stationed outside. At trial, evidence was admitted concerning Lloyd’s leadership of the Unknown Vice Lords street gang, his employment of armed security guards (fellow gang members), and two prior assassination attempts on his life. This evidence was offered to establish Lloyd’s motive to possess firearms for protection and to explain his relationship with other individuals present during the search.
