Choosing Where to Apply to Law School - An Admissions Officer's Guide
Research, Introspection, and Everything Else You Should Think About

Applying to the correct set of law schools will enhance your choices when it comes time to choose where to attend. My advice is that you apply to no more than nine law schools and use the following formula (feel free to modify, if needed, but make sure to keep at least one school in each category): You should apply to 3 “Safety Schools” – that is schools where based on your numeric profile and their numbers, you are likely to be admitted; 3 “Target Schools” – that is schools where based on your numeric profile and their numbers, you have a greater than 50% chance of being admitted. You should apply to 3 “Reach Schools” – that is schools where based on your numeric profile and their numbers, you are not likely to be admitted, but there remains a chance. ...

Has anyone ever said in LOCIs to two or more schools that they would 100% attend if admitted? I imagine it's happened before, but we shouldn't do that because it would be unethical, I take it.

Yeah imma keep telling myself logically I’m okay. My brother just shook me up when I said I wanted to email he said “don’t be an idiot you’re gonna screw yourself and ruin it just wait” but he didn’t even hear me out when I tried to explain why I felt the need to email
23:11
@CanWeTalkAboutTerrenceMalick: people unfortunately do it all the time I’ve seen redditors recommend it because “how will the schools know” and then just say whichever takes the bait first make sure you withdraw from the other immediately. But I agree it’s horrible behavior and unethical

It’s dumb and sometimes but rarely schools talk about applicants and it can screw you

23:13
Maybe it’s just an LSA urban legend but it’s supposed to be a bad idea
23:13
It makes me upset seeing people recommend that to others like it looks bad on them sure but it also weakens all statements like that cuz then schools have to figure out if everyone is saying that to every school or serious
23:13
The not-dishonest way to say it is "I would immediately accept an offer of admission" (and accept whichever school offers first), but only if you are prepared to do just that without waiting on aid etc.
23:14
Yeah but that’s still a different statement from “this school is my top
I told my school in the LOCI that is immediately go and I’m 100% committed (mainly bc I only applied to one law school)
23:15
The one you said I think is fine but when people just say to every school “you’re my favorite… don’t tell anyone” it’s so icky
I sound like a broken record but- I wrote a why Chicago essay that I loved for my original application and feel that I don’t have much more to add for a LOCI because my circumstances really haven’t changed- I applied this semester so my resume is pretty current
Is it a killer to not write one
KnowledgeableRitzyWasp
23:17
Yes it is incredibly bad not to write an loci if you’re on a waitlist
I do not know. I did not write a Why Chicago for my original application. But I did write a LOCI that I submitted today.
Got it thanks
For nu do u have to do one in addition to Kira?
KnowledgeableRitzyWasp
23:19
Good question, idk
Also don't know.
KnowledgeableRitzyWasp
23:19
Cuz Kira is probably similar to an loci, idk
Btw, did you do the Kira, LateScandalousCaterpillar?
I did the original one and need to do my WL one still lol by tonight
I mean, you got 40 minutes...
Unless you're not on the East Coast?
I don't know time zones factor into it.
It’s central time
Ahhhhhhh...
For Chicago
23:21
@LateScandalousCaterpillar: did you have a page limit for your why UChi? Maybe just treat the LOCI as another page. Point out additional things or go into further detail
23:22
Like if there’s a specific class or program you liked, now talk about the professors that teach that that you hope to interact with or stuff like that maybe?
