…apps to be perfect, and I am grateful I waited in the end. Negotiatie, negotiate, negotiate! I used different offers/asks and negotiated with Georgetown 4 times over 2 months before getting to a final offer. June 2020 LSAT Flex 179 (was PT’ing in the 170-175 range primarily) 2 years full-time work experience in…

Admitted to University of Chicago…this is the highest they offer outside of Rothman. Won’t negotiate. Duke: Scholarship interview 3/4. Received email 3/8! They told me it would be three weeks, but I got the offer only a few days later. Looks like a good first offer. Sent reconsideration 4/14 heard back 4/18. It’s a lot of money, and one of their…
…($135,000 + $24,000 for JD/LLM program), no time to negotiate. Georgetown 3/12 - Received form to be considered for possible scholarship funding. 3/25 - Received merit scholarship award ($135,000, 4/3 deadline to accept, unable to grant deadline extensions). Didn’t negotiate.
…rec letter. They did not offer any money and rejected my negotiation attempt. I am going at sticker which might be a bad financial decision but it is what it is I suppose. Money is not real. UPenn: One optional essay, Sent an extra rec letter UVA: Why UVA (this was mission critical, I think. Definitely do a Why…
Negotiate your scholarships!!!! The worst they can say is no. With the exception of Northwestern (because they said they weren’t going to negotiate with anyone this year), I got more money everywhere I asked.
A cohesive narrative and clear idea of what you want to do as a lawyer goes a long way! Also apply as early as possible so you have max time for scholarship negotiations (and peace of mind).
…for all application fees and all but 10 CAS fees. Did not negotiate with any school since most got back to me after I was happy with other offers.
…at UVA and NU. I don’t know why my scholarship negotiations went so poorly, so it’s hard to say what the misstep was. The one appeal that was successful (Chicago) only came after an in-person meeting with their financial aid team where we didn’t even talk about my appeal. Try to make a human connection, I suppose?…
Attending school using VA benefits so scholarship negotiation was just insurance if something went sideways with the VA. As a GRE applicant it does not seem like not using the LSAT held me back. I am very happy with my results and gladly going to Penn Carey. Once I identified Penn as my go-to school, I was able to…
…earlier meant As earlier –> earlier finaid –> more time to negotiate! It feels like crunch time right now (late March) and I can only imagine how stressed later applicants feel. Things I would have improved: Could have written/finalized personal statement, diversity statement, supps over the summer. Not sure why I…
Shoot your shot, put good essays together, and sell yourself to the max (and always, ALWAYS negotiate scholarships)!
…and I am so excited to attend in the fall! Scholarship negotiation was a total bust. I didn’t have much leverage with such gaps in either cost or ranking. Still, if you told me at the beginning of the cycle that I would pay less than half tuition at UVA, I would have been over the moon. It’s easy to feel a little…
…than I needed even if you account for wanting to negotiate. Most importantly, because you won’t listen, do not check your status checkers neurotically. Seriously be good to yourself.
…Duke before receiving official scholarship offers. Did not negotiate for more aid from schools.
I wish I’d applied to more schools so that I could have better leverage for negotiating financial aid. Also, if you’re a college freshman or sophomore considering going straight through, I recommend checking if your school has a 3+3 program where you can do your 1L year while you’re an undergrad senior (off the top…
Write the optional essays for every school you’re serious about, that is non-negotiable if you want the best odds. Also try and apply september/october, I still feel like that does make a difference at most schools. Did not think t6 was a possibility when the cycle first began due to my LSAT being lower than their…
