Beefy5layer's wisdom
- Your entire application timeline should be built around applying early in the cycle if you can. The longer you wait, the lower your chances are at most schools. This is simply a fact, and in a process as competitive as law school admissions, you should be taking every advantage that you can get.
- For splitters especially, your written materials need to be exceptional. Your LSAT may open the door, but it’s up to your written materials to convince admissions why they should take you over applicants that either boost both medians or other candidates with similar stats. I finished my first draft of my PS in March before fall admissions and continued to refine it weekly until I applied.
- You should write all optionals. Take every opportunity you can to tell a bit more of your story. The only caveat is that your optionals need to be high quality if you decide to write them.
- If you are a KJD, I know the pressure to enter the legal field early is real and the whole “why would I waste my time in another career” mentality may exist, but please consider taking a gap year or two to work. It can be the difference between As vs Rs at top law schools and thousands in scholarships. Life is not a race, and some of the most successful lawyers out there had years of work experience before clerking for the supreme court and working at the most prestigious firms.
