Your personal statement, and Why X statements I personally belive are crucial. Write them once, then rewrite them, then get a trusted source to look over them (Mine was a Notre Dame Alum who is my neighbor) and then rewrite them again. I went through almost 4 drafts of my personal statement, and my Why X for each school I personalized, and kept it true to why I was interested in that specific school.

Also apply only to schools you have a true interest in, in my experience that helps throughout as it keeps you motivated by the right things.
