Everyone, apply broadly and to MULTIPLE reaches. Do not let $45 cost you your dreams. You can solicit fee waivers, even CAS waivers. CAS Fee Waivers in 2022: WashU, UMN, BYU, Bama [Streamlined], Emory, ASU, Maurer, A&M, Tennessee, Nebraska [At LSAC virtual event], Wisconsin, Baylor, Dickinson, Houston, Park, Wayne, SMU, Case Western, Washburn, Tulsa, Drake.
Overview: Only six months before I got my Yale acceptance, I decided to apply for the military’s Funded Law Education Program and law school. Along with my regular work duties at the time, those six months were filled with a ridiculous amount of LSAT studying and application writing. At the time I felt honored and I am still honored today to be able to say that I was selected as a part of YLS’s class of 2026, paid for by the Funded Law Education Program. This was and still is truly unbelievable having come from humble beginnings, financial struggles, and having gone to a random state school for undergrad.
LSAT: I took the LSAT three times between August and October and ended with a 169. I underperformed my PTs every time and really was down on myself. I primarily used LSAT Demon to study. I am a big aesthetics and UI guy, and I don’t think another service comes close to what LSAT Demon offers. I also enjoy the bluntness and no-nonsense, but I understand that is not for everyone. If I could have taken the LSAT again, I would have until I had an official 99th percentile score. In hindsight it doesn’t matter, but I truly believe retakes will never hurt.
Application Process: I applied to 40 schools total, most of which were originally applied to with my second LSAT score (167). At the time, after living on r/LSAT, I really didn’t know what my outcome would be and felt I didn’t do well enough. Once I got my 169, I applied to the last 10 schools in the T14. Because I sent in my applications over the course of 30+ days, some schools ultimately got significantly stronger applications. At the end, my resume had been rewritten and my PS and DS were unrecognizable. Throughout this process I sent many updates to schools in the T20 from resumes to updated DSs to missing optionals. Besides UVA (lol), I don’t think it hurt anywhere.
Recommendations: I don’t care what anyone says nor what your actual goals are, shoot your shot at the best law schools in the country. Why not? If you don’t get in, that’s okay, you’ll still succeed. If you do, then your life may be forever changed. I know it is easy for me to say as a Military AA, but Yale rejects everyone, including 4.0/180s and AAs at or above 75ths. I still shot my shot below both medians and think you should too across the entire T14. It is only a 0% chance if you do not apply. URMs, Military, Splitters, and Reverse Splitters especially, please find a way to blanket the T14, if not the T20. Finally, be a good person on LSD and Reddit. Admissions Offices do check these and can easily identify applicants.
