• Write your “Why X” essays. Make them non-generic. I think it really screwed me that I didn’t do this–going off of Dean Z’s advice not to do it unless it was super compelling. ESPECIALLY do it if you’re not from the area.
• Expect your statistically likely results. It’s easy to fall into the mental trap of thinking that your essays can carry you that extra 1-2 pts to median, but chances are, they won’t. That doesn’t mean you don’t have a shot. But expect your results to look pretty damn close to where your stats say you will be accepted. Yes, even if you’re a good writer. Honestly, in this current cycle climate, I’d expect things to continue to get more competitive. So maybe lower your expectations below where you think your stats alone will get you. I didn’t get into schools that should have been good odds.

Remember, this isn’t about you. It’s not about how much of your soul you give to adcomms. It’s about their administrative priorities and their boss’s boss’s expectations. You can and will succeed at the law school you get accepted at, and where they want you in the room. So don’t worry too much.
