Khaz1420's wisdom
Casted a shallow net, applied to only ABA-approved online/part time programs. I plan to stay Active Duty Army while in law school (non-FLEP, 9 years of service) so I had to find to schools whose synchronous classes would not interfere with my duty day. I also had to rule out hybrid programs that required bi-monthly visits, something I knew I could not commit to for 4 years given the Army’s tempo. Applied with JD-Next (91st percentile) and 157 LSAT-equivalent GRE score.
Dayton - Applied only with JD-Next score. In addition to personal statement, wrote a supplemental information statement about growing up below the poverty line, and a statement regarding UGPA and my plan for success in an online, part-time program. Offered $5900 per semester.
Cleveland - Applied with GRE, sent JD-Next score as supplemental test. Wrote statement of unique background (poverty and Army) and part-time online statement.
Hawai’i - Applied with GRE, sent JD-Next score as supplemental test. Wrote diversity statement and online, part-time statement. Status tracker never moved past “complete”.
CWRU - Applied only with JD-Next score. Wrote diversity statement and online, part-time statement.
Seattle - Applied with both GRE and JD-Next scores. Wrote diversity statement and online, part-time statement. Offered $5k per year with stipend.
I will update with notes on using 100% GI-Bill for online/part-time as I go through the financial aid process.
Update on those using GI-Bill- if your school scholarship is worded something along the lines of “tuition, fees, and other associated costs,” the GI-Bill will pay the school and the school will pay you whatever is left over. For example, my GI-Bill just so happens to cover each semester’s tuition without having to tap into the scholarship I’ve been awarded by the school. So the school ends up paying me the scholarship money directly.
