NateSA's wisdom

A few pieces of additional information
Took the LSAT once.- While I don’t wish to go into detail about my undergrad, I have 5 undergrad institutions I have on my transcript—some 240 semester units. I have significant course study in Civil Engineering, Math, Psychology, History, Fine Art Photography, and Business Administration.

  • 10 year break between quitting my BA program and graduating with my degree in business administration.
  • 90 semester units, nailed a 3.8 degree GPA in 2 years. Unfortunately, the law of averages just didn’t look upon my cumulative GPA well.
  • Decided to skip the 2020-21 cycle for the obvious.
  • Skipping allowed me to prepare early. Transcripts were finalized and in LSAC’s hands by May of ‘21. LSAT was taken in early 2020, one of the last in person administrations.
  • Had applications fully prepared by mid-September, just had to hold off to finalize as my income allowed.
  • Early application success encouraged me to apply to more reach schools a little later in the cycle to see what would happen.
  • Resume is simple, I taught for about 7 years, ran a wedding photography business for 5 years, and have spent the past 10 years in a management position for a local security firm.
I did not use any space on my application to explain why I wanted to go to law school.- What I did do was demonstrate how I applied my skills throughout my career. I wrote an addendum concerning my GPA. This being a thorough honest assessment on my younger self then juxtaposing that assessment with the current academic me. I hoped to show myself being a simple, coherent, and thoughtful writer with every document I submitted.
  • It should be noted that I do have a physical impairment that has left me legally blind and I have battled a life threatening condition my entire life. I did write a statement addressing this, but the tone was simple, factual, and—very true to my nature—played down the condition as I have done my entire life. The point of the statement wasn’t to earn sympathy or impress anyone, rather to show that I can bring a diverse opinion to the classroom because quite literally I see the world differently. This might have been the factor that helped me the most, I’ve debated over bringing this up. I try to live as normally as I can, but a fact is still a fact.
  • I only briefly mentioned that I have a daughter. I get how important family is to us all; however, I saw this process as a professional development opportunity. I have always kept my personal life separated from my professional. And I see this as no different.
  • I understand how important and life changing having children can be. The temptation to write about them is real because they are everything. But, I just can’t see the fact that having kids will win one points in the eyes of a law school admissions committee member. Except for maybe showing time management skills.
  • I think that’s it. I’m writing this midway through the cycle. it’s early January. I have some great offers right now and look forward to seeing how the rest of the cycle unfolds.
—Above all, don’t let this process or the numbers define or consume you. Be prepared and give every aspect your all. Good luck!
