Try to have your school list set at the beginning so you can apply everywhere at once (rather than scrambling to apply to safeties later in the cycle). One of the best pieces of advice I got before applying was to follow the 3-3-3 rule: apply to 3 reaches, 3 targets, and 3 safeties. Obviously, I applied to more than that, but I think that this rule is a good framework to work with. If you really want to be a lawyer, you don’t NEED to be in the T14. In almost every case, T20 and T50 (and T100) are good enough to get you where you want to go. Try your best to be honest with yourself about your admissions chances, and don’t forget to apply to some safeties early on. (Applying later in the cycle to clear safeties may put you at risk for yield protection!) That being said, don’t hesitate to apply to more places if you get fee waivers or feel like you need to apply to “one more safety” - just in case!
