PreviousLittleShark's wisdom

  • On application timing: many of the resources I found online either led me to believe that application submission timing made very little difference in outcomes (podcasts from Spivey Consulting, Navigating Law School Admissions, Dean Z) or that application timing is a major factor in likelihood of acceptance (this seems to have been more of the case many years ago, but this idea still seems to be somewhat common on forums like Reddit). I found it useful to filter by application sent date on LSD, and generally found that the importance of application timing varied greatly by school (I mostly looked at the T14). If you’re like I was and struggling to balance submitting the best app possible with submitting in a timely manner, I would recommend looking into what LSD says about how acceptance rates at your top choices vary by month submitted. With that being said, merit scholarship availability seems to be much more limited across all schools the later you apply.
  • On LSAT prep: something that helped me improve when approaching questions was shifting my mindset when reviewing answer choices from “what are reasons why this AC could be correct” to “what are reasons why it could be incorrect.” This allowed me to catch trap choices more easily than with my initial approach. Mike Kim’s LSAT Trainer helped me a lot as well.
  • On softs/your narrative as an applicant: I think a better question than asking what tier softs someone has is what tier narrative they have. Someone can have a bunch of softs that are impressive individually (elite internships, unique upbringing, published work, etc), but I think softs are most valuable when they contribute to a compelling, cohesive narrative about an applicant. Try to think about what narrative you want to paint of yourself to adcomms and seek experiences that reinforce that narrative.
