TinyChaoticPenguin's wisdom
Reapplicant. Went through the hell cycle of 2020-21. Reapplied with a higher LSAT, prior LSAT was in the mid-160s.
Did Why X essays in my 2020 apps for NYU, UPenn, GULC & CLS. Did not add why X 2nd time around, common wisdom for reapplicants is that they will review your old file as well to see if you made any changes, put in the effort, so I felt adding a why X again was unnecessary. I was waitlisted at Penn, CLS, and GULC in the 20-21 cycle, & rejected at NYU.
CLS: new PS, new DS, slightly updated resume, nothing spectacular to add.- UChi: wrote Why UChi. I think this fit really well with the school in terms of their whole focus, idk I think an adcom would read it and think ‘this person would fit here’. Have heard UChi likes Why X essays. UR3: 2/13
- NYU: same as CLS.
- Penn: same as CLS, but I added in the Core Values essay this time. Did not have that last time but still, got a WL. Have heard they like the Core Values essay
- NW: did not add why X. addressed that in KIRA interview. applied for one of their dual degree programs
- GULC: did a different optional essay this time. first time I did top 10. wanted to show I was committed, so I chose another option that I think I did well on.
- Cornell: was hesitant to apply bc they brutally rejected a lot of folks with high stats. wrote a Why X that I think appealed to their whole community value thing. also applied for dual degree program. II: 2/08, Interview completed + received: 2/11
- UVA: no why X. i genuinely could not think of a good why x. also, got lazy. Most of their acceptances from a prior cycle, did not write a Why X. Do your research, some schools like it. others don’t.
- UCLA: panic applied late, did the specific program contribution section
