ToxicEnthusiast's wisdom
I was honestly shocked by my results. Given my numbers, I didn’t expect to get waitlisted at Penn State or OU. They were reaches for me, like most schools I applied to. I genuinely think it was due to my strong personal statement and unique softs. But we’ll never know, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.
If I learned anything from my cycle, it’s this:
You miss all the shots you never take! If you see yourself going there in the slightest and can afford to submit an application, DO IT! Apply Broadly.
Here’s some advice from me:
Focus on your LSAT! Take it as many times as you need, especially if your GPA isn’t the strongest… I believe I definitely would have gotten better outcomes with a higher score.Apply early (with your best application) but do not with a subpar application. You will not be doing yourself any favors. Put your best foot forward; you only get one shot at a first impression.Always ask for app fee waivers, even CAS waivers, and save your money. I managed to get some from all the schools that didn’t offer me any unsolicited.Have a narrative going and perfect your personal statement.Always write additional essays (if you have something new or meaningful to add) and build upon your application. It’s free real estate, so take advantage!Have stellar rec letters! Do not fumble the bag on this one.Get a hobby to stay off LSD and Reddit as much as possible. This process is already stressful enough, don’t drive yourself crazy comparing yourself to others and focusing on things beyond your control. Remember you are more than your numbers!People hardly do this, but apply for as many external scholarships as possible! There’s so much money out there, and you’ll need it.
And the most crucial piece of advice, in my opinion:
Love the school that loves you! Keep an open mind and give all the schools that accept you a chance. Who knows, you might be perfect for each other.
At the beginning of the cycle, I had a “dream school” in mind, visited the campus, didn’t fall in love with it, and then got waitlisted…
I mention all this because, shortly after, I visited one of the schools that accepted me. I arrived feeling on the fence about it and left campus knowing it was where I was supposed to be. I fell in love with it!
Rankings and prestige aren’t everything. Go where you are wanted and, most importantly, where you will be happy! It also matters. F the haters!
Good luck to everyone! You got this, and you’ll end up where you’re meant to be. You’re going to be an amazing lawyer! :)
