VeggieCowboy's wisdom

Hey, you’re probably reading this because you have similar stats to me. Welcome, super splitter!

I used this site as my guiding light when applying for the 2024 cycle. I always appreciated the “wisdom for future generations” on profiles that actually wrote something, so here are my scattered thoughts that I wish someone told me or I think everyone should do during their process:

This is a numbers game. The reason this site is so helpful in the application process is you will be able to tell which schools you will get into and how much money they are going to offer you. Obviously you need to take into account whether or not you are an URM, and there is a little gray area in the medians, but just look at the graphs and they will give you the answer.

When looking for schools to apply to think first of where (state/city) do you want to go to school. Then, how much can you afford to pay for school (including cost of living). And finally, what school in the areas you wan to live/practice will give someone with your stats enough money to be able to afford to attend that school. If I had spent more time thinking about these things and trusted my stats more, I probably would have applied to 1/3 of the schools and saved myself a good chunk of change, but that’s how it goes as a first gen.

Make appointments to talk with the admissions office of every school you’re applying to. Gets your name in their heads and it’s the perfect moment to ask for a fee waiver. You should never pay a school to submit an application. If they won’t wave an application fee, they’re not gonna give you a scholarship if they admit you at all.

If you have stats like mine you should also go to r/outsideT14lawschools on Reddit. It’s an amazing and extremely supportive community of people going through the application process. Good vibes and good advice all around.
