bobcarofan's wisdom
Most of what worked for me as a splitter–I assume that’s why you’re reading this–is what you would expect (difficult major + writing ability + significant work experience) and doesn’t lend itself to “advice.”
I did, however, think about how to address a downward trend in my grades. My GPA is low because of my final three mediocre semesters. One of my recommendations was from a professor who could attest to my positive qualities as a student even during that time. This may not be practical for everyone 5+ years out of school, but I think this was the right call rather than just leaning completely on professional experience.
I also wrote a GPA addendum. I had a major injury in one semester, which I mentioned, but the primary reason that I wrote about was purposefully prioritizing work and extracurriculars in writing and political advocacy, at the expense of my coursework, especially in my major.
If your situation is similar, and you can explain it in a brief “just-the-facts” way without making excuses–talking about how what happened was a choice that you learned from–I think this approach helped (clearly didn’t hurt much). Obviously, being very busy is not uncommon, so don’t exaggerate and use your judgement.
Good essays come in many forms. Don’t think you need to be able to write an artistic or intimate memoir as a personal statement if you don’t want to–especially if that’s not your style. Write with honesty and show schools how you got to where you are today, what your goals/values are, and why you’ll be a great lawyer. Good luck!
