breytigs's wisdom
tl;dr: Don’t let anyone tell you if law school is or is not for you, many told me I couldn’t get into a good school, but I proved them wrong. It may have taken an extra three years of WE but it was worth it. Shoot for the moon and do your thing! You’ve got this!
I am making my profile public to give people a look at what a low GPA application cycle might look like. I had to work a lot in college, had an undiagnosed learning disability, and admittedly probably could’ve screwed around a bit less. I applied to two schools as a senior in undergrad and received one R and one WL that turned into an A but it was the first or second week of August and I couldn’t make that work.
After undergrad, I immediately got a job as a paralegal and have been working as one ever since. I’m hoping that my work experience will help my application. I highly recommend this path of working before law school to everyone, especially people with lower GPAs. I plan to make updates to this as a sort of log as I go.
One final thing I’ll say is that a lot of people told me this wouldn’t be possible for me including my school’s prelaw advisor. Some people will tell you regardless of your credentials that law school is a bad idea or not something you should pursue. Hear these people out really make sure this is what you want to do. If you decide that it still is something you want to do then go all out and chase this thing down. You’ve got this!
10/1/2023 - WUSTL is my first choice because they’re a great school and because of GPA redaction. Applied on this date
10/3/2023 - Received an interview invite from WUSTL
10/24/2023 - Interviewed with WUSTL, the interview went pretty well but felt a bit short and I feel like I could’ve said more. The main thing I regret is not being ready to talk about my personal life and hobbies when asked.
10/26/2023 - WUSTL informs me my application has been moved to RD, disappointing both because I wanted to go there and now I have to get the rest of my apps ready and turned in.
11/2/2023 - Applied to SLU and UMKC
11/10/2023 - Applied to the rest of my schools
11/14/2023 - Received an interview invite from UMKC (just gonna keep this black as the yellows look awful)
11/17/2023 - Interview with UMKC, very casual and conversational felt like he was trying to sell me on the school rather than interview me. Very nice guy and a great experience
11/20/2023 - After 4 years, I got my first A from UMKC! Per their website scholarship information comes 2-4 weeks after receiving your A.
11/21/2023 - Received an official letter from UMKC with a $9,000 scholarship offer
12/1/2023 - First R of the cycle from Texas A&M
12/5/2023 - Received an acceptance letter from DePaul with a $105,000 scholarship offer
1/5/2024 - After a month-long drought of updates, my Saint Louis University application goes under review
1/16/2024 - Accepted to Saint Louis University! (This is a big one for me personally because they rejected me when I applied during undergrad). Also received a total scholarship offer of $75,000 over three years
2/16/2024 - Attended SLU’s admitted students day, got some good insight and advice from current students and faculty, highly recommend attending this even for any school you’re interested in.
2/23/2024 - Waitlisted at Loyola, a bit of a bummer but I’m keeping my fingers crossed I can get off the list.
3/6/2024 - Received an interview invite from the University of Wisconsin interview is set for
3/13
3/8/2024 - Waitlisted by Wash U (not very surprising after the amount of time it took them to get back to me I expected it to happen)
3/13/2024 - Interviewed at Wisconsin, it was very casual. I was basically told at the interview I would be admitted
3/15/2024 - Officially admitted at Wisconsin, per their email Scholarship information will come out in 2-3 weeks
3/16/2024 - Withdrew my application from UMKC, between low scholarship offer, better offers from other schools, and seat deposits coming up it was not a good fit for me
3/19/2024 - Received my scholarship offer from Wisconsin they offered $150,000 over all three years. I was floored when I received the offer and think that is where I’m going to go.
3/20/2024 - Reached out to SLU for additional scholarship funding to see if they could at least match Wisconsin’s offer, they came back with $105,000 a few days later.
4/6/2024 - Attended Wisconsin’s admitted students day, and greatly enjoyed it. Decided this is where I’m going to go assuming I don’t get off the waitlist at WUSTL, sent withdrawal letters to all other schools
8/5/2024 - Got my official withdrawal/rejection done for Loyola and Wash U in late July/Early August officially going to Madison. It was a long process but overall I think I got what I wanted. Considering trying to transfer to a T14 but for now, I’m going to just see how Wisconsin treats me and what kind of opportunities I find while I’m up there.
4/28/2025 - Working on finals as we speak, two more finals and I’ll have finished my 1L year, great to check in every now and again!
