I applied with a 170 at first then raised to a 172 during the cycle. My advice: apply broadly and apply early (before Thanksgiving: perfect). As soon as I got the 170, I knew I was applying everywhere with that and riding with it even if I didnt raise my score. That absolutely hurt me at some schools but it all worked out (great scholly state T40). Shoot your shot at the best schools you can, but give yourself enough safeties (look at me getting R’d by UIUC). Start your PS and DS months before you apply. Come up with a final version and sit on it for a few months. Ask recommenders far in advance.
