sarchasm's wisdom
LSAT Info:
My initial LSAT was 164, and I applied to most of these schools with that score. I applied with my Jan. score of 166 to a handful of schools I placed on hold by emailing the admissions teams after deciding to take the LSAT again, and a few new ones I picked after receiving that score. Do not be afraid to apply later in the cycle to target schools (I can only speak to early Feb) if you have made positive changes in your application package. I also used the higher score as a material change in my application when approaching scholarship reconsideration requests.
Scholarship Info:
Campbell did not reconsider scholarships this cycle. They have 4–5 full rides to submit a separate application for, otherwise I think I hit their ceiling, which still leaves around ~50k+ over 3 yrs for tuition. - I applied for the UTK Dean’s Scholarship to reduce the amount to in-state tuition. I didn’t get it, but did get the Volunteer Scholarship through this process.
- UNC + FSU + Iowa have infrastructure in place to support and encourage out-of-state students to become in-state students during 2L/3L for tuition purposes. This is not the case with all state schools, so make sure to check on this. I emailed a few schools to ensure I wasn’t missing anything. Not every state school has a process for applying for residency. If you separately pursue residency and receive it, they will lower your merit award accordingly (true across the board).
- Elon has great fellowships that open up later in the cycle, I think this year it was around late Jan/early Feb. Also every student who applies to Elon is interviewed over the phone as part of the application process.
- Iowa requires you to register for a scholarship interview after being admitted. The earlier you can apply and hopefully be admitted, the better IMO so you can schedule and complete that interview. You will not receive any scholarship info until you complete the interview.
- UK does not outline a process for becoming a resident to reduce tuition, and if you do apply for residency and receive it, they will adjust your scholarship to account for that. They say in their packet they will only reconsider scholarships if you have a new material change to your application, like a higher LSAT or GPA.
Other tips:
Read “Don’t Go to Law School (Unless)” before you make a decision. - Ensure you have a well-rounded school list. I staggered my applications and was able to find a few more “target” schools with my new LSAT.
-
Use Reddit sparingly; it can be neurotic.
7Sage blog posts and free resources are really good for waitlist info and scholarship negotiation. https://7sage.com/podcast-episode-71-scholarship-negotiations-and-reconsideration-part-2/- —– this is such a great podcast/transcript and I highly recommend it before drafting reconsideration attempts. - I used LSAT Lab and would recommend them. I also used 7sage for drilling to keep myself fresh for a month.
Good luck!
