Overflow from the 20-21 Cycle (Reeaplicant)
I was a KJD and now I am not. My best advice for those who are reapplying, especially those who (like me) have a less than stellar resume through undergrad:
You don’t *need *fancy law internships or prestigious extracurriculars, but without them, you are at a disadvantage. Even with my stats last year, I was waitlisted just about everywhere. Schools were inclined to admit people with my stats who had stronger softs than me, and that held categorically true. So, Work hard on your application material. Really shape a strong personal statement that explains why law school is going to assist you in reaching your career goals. Or one that demonstrates why, despite your lack of real-world experience, you will be a good fit and contribution to the law school. Your optional essays should be genuine and honest. They can tell if you are writing one just to write one. So pick the optional that you think you could be the most honest and persuasive in sharing that narrative with. Don’t be so serious. I took this process so seriously last cycle, and the disappointment began to leak into my personal life. You are allowed to be reasonably disappointed (i.e. don’t bottle it up). As a KJD, this was really the first time that things didn’t go my way. It was a crash course in handling failure, and what I learned is that life goes on regardless. So try to just have fun. Be realistic. This is a huge step in your career. I made the mistake of committing to a school I wasn’t happy with because I felt the pressure of needing to go to school that year. Luckily, I backtracked and decided to reapply. The results have already proved that it was most likely the best choice I could have made. And I cannot stress this part enough: HAVE A BACKUP PLAN*. The anxiety and dread that haunted me for the months after graduating, having no job lined up…. It’s really not worth it. No matter how ^sure you are you’re going to law school, just please take some time to think of some alternatives need you reapply.
