Admitted to New York UniversityDon’t turn in your top schools apps first… Applying in September vs October doesn’t make any difference, and if you notice a typo or error in your apps, you don’t want to discover it on your top choices and fix it for your second choices
2.5 years WE in Big Law Wrote “Why X” for some but not all schools Included DS for all schools that accepted it Submitted GPA and/or addenda depending on the school Still active on CLS Reserve and SLS waitlist as of July 2021
I had a pretty tight resume with plenty of softs related to mentorship, athletics, and research, as well as demonstrated success in a field (IP/tech) where there are very few URMs.
Trust yourself, trust the process, and trust the lord. Everything happens for the best. Don’t let law school admissions define you. You are more than numbers, tell your story, show your motivation and determination… You’ll be just fine
Apply to your top-choice schools last! Your application will improve as you move through the application process. Take a deep breath, you’ve got this!
Ultimately, this was an easy decision. As a PI applicant, my goal for the cycle was NYU or Berkeley. I am exceedingly fortunate to have received a full ride at Berkeley and after being rejected for RTK, it was a no-brainer to attend.
Wrote “Why X” for Chicago, Penn (core values), Michigan, Berkeley, UVA, NDLS. Included minor “Why X” in Columbia PS. End of cycle! Will stay on all waitlists except WashU but most likely attending either NYU, UVA, or Michigan.
Strong softs with a cohesive narrative (somewhere between tiers 2 and 3). TFA for 2 years after undergrad, with another year at a similar organization in a leadership role. Good luck, and don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself!
Heroes get remembered, but legends never die. Follow your heart, kid, and you’ll never go wrong. Wrote supplementals for: UPenn - Core Values UVA - Why UVA Duke - Why Duke Georgetown - Top 10
Softs and a cohesive matter so much more than you think.
work experience is your friend!! especially as a super splitter and your PS/supplements and general writing skills matter way more than you would think, especially if you can tell a convincing story about why law and why now
“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take - Wayne Gretzky” - Michael Scott
STEM major/business minor. Otherwise, fairly average softs (legal & financial internships, volunteer work, club leadership positions, TA experience, etc). T20 undergrad. Did not apply for aid at NYU, Duke, or Northwestern.
Wrote every optional essay to all of these applications. I didn’t keep exact track of the dates, so any of the applications where the date complete is the exact same day as the date received was just an approximation.
It is NOT just a numbers game! Do not only listen to the 0Ls on r/lawschooladmissions! Craft a compelling story about your interests / why law and get great recommendation letters and you can outperform your numbers.
Technically not KJD because I spent a year to get a Masters in between graduation from undergrad in ’21 and law school in ’22 but never worked full time. duke ur3 on 1/6/22 chicago ur3/4 on 1/18/22 & ur4/5 on 1/19/22
Be interesting! Do cool things before, during, and after law school. This is more life advice than it is admissions advice, although it applies to admissions too – do whatever you’re passionate about! Passion shows.
