Do not be afraid of a gap year! I was so close to settling with my LSAT score and applying to schools I was less excited about. It was scary to leave the education system for the first time, but it was absolutely a positive experience, gave me time to study, and helped me save some money for law school. My outcomes were much better because I took the time to work, study, and prepare during my gap year.

On the same note, spend time working on the LSAT, and don’t sign up for the LSAT until you’re ready. I made the mistake of registering and then trying to cram my studying in the time before the test date. Build up your confidence, then register.

Think long and hard about why you want to go to law school, and find a way to tie that together with your education, experience, or life story into a strong personal statement.

As for the “Why X” essays, take time to do research, network with faculty and students, and visit your top choices to write a detailed and compelling statement. I think they helped me significantly at UNC and GMU.

Finally, please negotiate your scholarships. You have nothing to lose by asking, and I got very positive responses when I asked politely and sent in my other offers.
