Cast a wide net when applying, even if you are below medians, and always be sure to have several people look over your essay drafts. For interviews, overprepare and use 7sage to find questions in advance. It also helps to draw from specific examples and interactions you had with the school. AOs love that.

Don’t be afraid to update schools on important mid-cycle professional or academic developments. I think staying in touch with schools through updates and having a genuine “ Why X” essay is what gave me a leg up in this process. I did not write the contrasting viewpoints essay for SLS, which in hindsight I regret.
