My Advice for Law School Applicants:
Applying to law school can seem intimidating, but there’s a lot of support available. Once you dive into the process, you’ll find that many people are willing to help—and it’s not as overwhelming as it first appears. 😊
1. Focus on your GPA and LSAT score: These are the most critical factors in admissions. Be sure to tailor your résumé to each application and request letters of recommendation early.
(Remember, LSAT scores are greatly inflated compared to when I took it. My LSAT score was 95% percentile in 2020; now, it is 93%. Part of this is due to a newish LSAC thing where a test taker can delete their scores and retake. I think it is discriminatory against economically challenged applicants)
2. Consider taking time off after undergrad: Many people take a gap before law school, which can be beneficial. I did, and it was a great experience—don’t feel like you’re falling behind if you choose this path.
(Law School is like a job. Working helps you get into a routine and helps to give you direction on what you want to do and what you DON’T want to do)
3. Write an authentic personal statement: Make sure your statement sounds like you and reflects your experiences. Please share it with family and friends for feedback to ensure it’s genuine and engaging.
4. Weigh cost and scholarships over ranking: Law school rankings can be arbitrary, and since law school is expensive and part-time work isn’t feasible, it’s crucial to consider affordability and scholarships over a school’s rank.
5. Avoid Reddit and similar forums: These spaces can often be negative and hyper-focused on rankings, which can take a toll on your mental health. I found it helpful to steer clear of them during my application process.
6. Seek out positive, informed resources: Some of my favorite resources are the Law School Toolbox, Navigating Law School Admissions Podcasts, and The Girl’s Guide to Law School. I also recommend women join the Facebook group Ladies in Law, which is a supportive and helpful community.
I hope you find this advice helpful! Feel free to reach out if you have any more questions. Good luck with your applications! 😊
