About & Wisdom
Stugots's wisdom
non-FLEX LSAT applicant. early on in the cycle I got really resentful about FLEXies and their inflated scores (still am a little bit), but its not the applicants fault things turned out this way. even the exam I took (July 2019) was atypical in that I could have cancelled my score to retake. Beyond that, how many of the lines on my resume did I earn vs. how many of them were things that I arose out of serendipity but that I take as my achievement. i wish i hadn’t invested so much negative energy in dissecting how exactly I was wronged by chance while overlooking the positive things in my life that have only happened out of chance.
You can see my outcomes, but I should mention I did T30 UG and have a humanities master’s from an Ivy league (one of the ones that rejected me for law school). In going from a respectable university to one of the world’s best, I ended up becoming probably twice as good a student with half as much success. Something I hope future applicants keep in mind is that university resources at best increase linearly while prestige and competition increase exponentially. most of the value you will get as a law student will come from the resources you are able to get at the school (scholarships, limited firm slots for each school, face time with professors etc.) and only in edge cases do prestige and connections make a difference. comparing it to your law application, think of school resources like your hards and prestige like your softs. which would you rather invest time and money into for when you hit the job market? prestige is not valueless, but its value is variable and difficult to quantify, and ultimately the increase in competition will likely offset the additional resources.
