Term: CONTRAVENE
Definition: When someone does something they're not supposed to do, or when something goes against the rules, we say it contravenes. For example, if a soldier disobeys an order from their officer, they contravene the rules. Or if a law goes against what most people think is right, it contravenes public policy.
Definition: To violate or infringe; to defy. To come into conflict with; to be contrary to.
1. The student contravened the school's dress code by wearing a tank top and shorts.
2. The new law contravenes the constitution and is therefore unconstitutional.
3. The company's actions contravene the environmental regulations set by the government.
These examples illustrate how contravene means to go against or break a rule or law. In the first example, the student broke the school's dress code. In the second example, the law goes against the constitution. In the third example, the company's actions are not in line with the government's regulations. All of these actions are considered to be in violation of something and therefore contravene it.
