A quick definition of failure to thrive:

Failure to thrive is a condition where a child is not growing or developing as they should be. This can happen because they are not getting enough food, love, or attention from their parents or caregivers. It can also be caused by medical or psychological problems. Sometimes, failure to thrive is considered a form of abuse or neglect. It usually happens in the first three years of a child's life and can cause them to be smaller or less developed than other children their age.

A more thorough explanation:

Definition: Failure to thrive is a medical and psychological condition in which a child's height, weight, and motor development fall significantly below average growth rates. It can occur during the first three years of a child's life, and the child may suffer marked retardation or cease to grow.

Example: A child who is not gaining weight or growing as expected, and is not meeting developmental milestones such as crawling or walking, may be diagnosed with failure to thrive. This condition can be caused by a variety of factors, including malnutrition, neglect, or underlying medical conditions.

Illustration: For example, if a child is not receiving enough nutrients from their diet, they may not be able to grow and develop properly. If a parent or caregiver is not providing adequate care, such as feeding, changing diapers, or providing a safe environment, the child may also suffer from failure to thrive. In some cases, underlying medical conditions such as gastrointestinal disorders or genetic disorders may contribute to the condition.
