JPML stands for the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation.

The JPML is a specialized panel of federal judges responsible for managing complex lawsuits that have been filed in many different federal courts across the United States. When numerous lawsuits involve similar factual questions and are brought against the same defendant(s) in various districts, the JPML has the authority to consolidate these cases into a single federal court for pretrial proceedings. This process, known as "multidistrict litigation" (MDL), aims to streamline the legal process, prevent duplicate discovery efforts, reduce costs for all parties, and ensure consistent legal rulings before the cases are potentially sent back to their original courts for trial, or more commonly, resolved through a global settlement.

• Example 1: Defective Medical Device

  Imagine a scenario where a new type of implantable medical device is found to have a critical design flaw, causing serious health complications for patients. Thousands of individuals who received this device file separate lawsuits against the manufacturer in federal courts across dozens of states. Instead of the manufacturer having to defend itself in potentially hundreds of different courts, the JPML would likely consolidate all these individual lawsuits into one federal court. This allows a single judge to oversee all the initial evidence gathering (discovery), expert witness depositions, and preliminary legal arguments related to the device's defect, making the process far more efficient for everyone involved.
