The term laity refers collectively to all members of a religious organization or community who are not part of its official clergy or ordained religious leadership.

In essence, the laity comprises the general congregants, followers, or members who participate in religious life, worship, and community activities, but do not hold formal, consecrated, or ordained roles such as priests, ministers, rabbis, imams, or monks.

• Example 1: Community Volunteer at a Church
  Maria attends her local Christian church every Sunday. She volunteers her time to teach Sunday school classes for children and helps organize the annual charity drive. While she is deeply committed to her faith and actively involved in the church community, she has not undergone theological training or ordination to become a pastor, deacon, or elder. In this scenario, Maria is considered part of the laity because she is a member of the congregation who participates in religious life without holding an official clerical position.

• Example 2: Synagogue Board Member
  David is a long-standing member of his synagogue. He regularly attends services, observes religious holidays, and serves on the synagogue's administrative board, which manages the building's upkeep and financial affairs. Despite his significant contributions and leadership within the community, David has not pursued the extensive religious education or ordination required to become a rabbi or a cantor. David, along with the other congregants who are not rabbis or cantors, constitutes the laity of the synagogue.
