Petitio refers to a formal legal claim or suit initiated by a plaintiff in a civil law context.

It often specifically denotes a claim made against a particular piece of property or an object itself (known as an action in rem), rather than against a specific person. Historically, the term also referred more broadly to any formal petition or demand, especially concerning real estate.

• Example 1: Eminent Domain
  A local government seeks to acquire a private parcel of land for a new public park through eminent domain. The legal filing by the government to formally assert its right to take the property and initiate the condemnation process, directed at the land itself, constitutes a petitio.
