Quasi-affinity refers to a relationship that closely resembles a relationship by marriage (known as affinity) but does not arise directly from a traditional marital bond.

It describes connections formed through legal processes like adoption, or through established family structures like step-relationships, where individuals are treated as if they are related by marriage for specific legal or social purposes, even without a direct marital link creating the connection. It signifies an "almost" or "as if" in-law relationship.

• Example 1: Adoptive Family In-Laws

  Imagine Sarah adopts a child, Emily. Years later, Emily marries Mark. The relationship between Sarah (the adoptive parent) and Mark (Emily's spouse) is one of quasi-affinity. While Sarah and Mark are not connected by a direct bloodline or by Sarah's own marriage to Mark's parent, their bond is treated similarly to an in-law relationship because of Sarah's legal adoption of Emily, who then married Mark.

• Example 2: Stepparent and Stepchild's Spouse

  John marries Lisa, who has a son, David, from a previous marriage. David is John's stepson. Later, David marries Rachel. The relationship between John (the stepparent) and Rachel (David's spouse) is an example of quasi-affinity. John is not directly related to Rachel by marriage to Rachel's parent, nor by blood. However, because John is married to David's mother, and David is married to Rachel, a familial connection resembling an in-law relationship is formed between John and Rachel.

• Example 3: Long-Term Unmarried Partnership

  Maria and Alex have lived together as partners for thirty years, raising Alex's daughter, Sofia, from a previous relationship. Although Maria and Alex never legally married, Maria acted as a mother figure to Sofia. When Sofia marries Ben, the relationship between Maria (Alex's long-term partner and Sofia's de facto stepmother) and Ben (Sofia's spouse) could be considered quasi-affinity in certain contexts. This acknowledges the deep, family-like bond that exists, even without a formal marriage between Maria and Alex to establish a traditional affinity link.
