Simple English definitions for legal terms

refoulement

Read a random definition: CPT

A quick definition of refoulement:

Term: REFOULEMENT

Definition: Refoulement means sending a refugee back to the country they fled from. It is when a person seeking safety is forced to return to a place where they may face persecution, torture, or other serious harm. This is not allowed under international law and is the opposite of non-refoulement, which means protecting refugees from being sent back to danger.

A more thorough explanation:

Definition: Refoulement is a French term that refers to the act of expelling or returning a refugee from one country to another. It is the opposite of non-refoulement, which is the principle that prohibits the return of refugees to a country where they may face persecution or harm.

Examples:

  • A Syrian refugee who fled to Turkey is forcibly returned to Syria by the Turkish authorities. This is an example of refoulement.
  • An Afghan refugee who is seeking asylum in the United States is denied entry and sent back to Afghanistan, where they may face persecution. This is also an example of refoulement.

These examples illustrate how refoulement can put refugees in danger by sending them back to a country where they may face harm or persecution. It is important for countries to uphold the principle of non-refoulement and protect the rights of refugees.

@mastermonkey45: Looking at some of the recent decisions in relation to when they went complete, I'd say it's a good sign. It seems many declines were sent within about 5-6 weeks of completion. Given those were applications that were SENT in January, I'd say that means you're still solidly in the running. :)
