Example 1: Initial Wellhead Processing
Imagine a newly drilled onshore well that begins producing a complex fluid stream directly from the reservoir. This stream is a blend of crude oil, dissolved natural gas, and saline formation water. A large, cylindrical separator is the first major piece of equipment installed at the wellhead. It uses principles like gravity and pressure differentials to allow the heavier water to settle at the bottom, the lighter oil to form a middle layer, and the gas to rise to the top, enabling each component to be collected and routed separately.
Example 2: Managing Enhanced Oil Recovery Fluids
During enhanced oil recovery (EOR) operations, such as water flooding, large volumes of water are injected into an oil reservoir to push out more crude oil.
