A quick definition of urban planning:

Urban planning is the process of carefully planning and developing cities and towns. This involves making decisions about how land should be used, such as where buildings should be built and what types of activities should take place in different areas. Urban planning also considers the impact of development on the environment and the community. It involves methods like zoning and environmental studies to ensure that development is done in a deliberate and systematic way.

A more thorough explanation:

Urban planning, also known as land-use planning, is the process of intentionally and systematically developing real estate. This is done through various methods such as zoning, environmental-impact studies, and other techniques.

For example, a city may use urban planning to designate certain areas for residential, commercial, or industrial use. This helps to ensure that the city is organized and that different types of buildings are located in appropriate areas. Urban planning can also involve creating green spaces, bike lanes, and other features that make a city more livable.

Overall, urban planning is an important tool for creating sustainable, functional, and attractive cities.
