Whiplash refers to an injury to the soft tissues of the neck, specifically the muscles, ligaments, and discs within the cervical spine. This type of injury occurs when the head is suddenly and forcefully thrown backward and then forward, or side-to-side, beyond its normal range of motion. This rapid, whip-like movement can strain, sprain, or even tear the tissues in the neck, leading to symptoms such as pain, stiffness, headaches, and reduced mobility.

• Example 1: Rear-End Car Collision

  Imagine a driver stopped at a traffic light. Another vehicle, failing to brake in time, crashes into the rear of their car. The impact causes the stopped car to lurch forward. While the driver's body is restrained by the seatbelt, their head, being less constrained, is violently thrown backward against the headrest and then sharply forward. This sudden, extreme jerking motion of the head and neck is the classic mechanism of whiplash, causing strain to the neck's soft tissues.

• Example 2: Sports Injury During a Tackle

  Consider a rugby player who is tackled unexpectedly from the side during a game.
