Simple English definitions for legal terms

words of art

Read a random definition: demented

A quick definition of words of art:

Words of art are special words that have a specific meaning in a particular profession or field. They are like secret words that only people who work in that field know. For example, in a court case, the person who starts the case is called the plaintiff and the person who is being sued is called the defendant. These are words of art that only lawyers and judges use.

A more thorough explanation:

Words of art refer to specific terminology used in a particular profession, art, science, technology, or other field. These are words or phrases that have a unique meaning within that field and may not be commonly understood by those outside of it.

For example, in the legal field, the terms "plaintiff" and "defendant" are words of art. The plaintiff is the party who brings a lawsuit, while the defendant is the party being sued. These terms have a specific meaning within the legal system and are not used in the same way in everyday language.

Another example of words of art can be found in the medical field. Terms like "diagnosis," "prognosis," and "treatment" have specific meanings within the medical profession that may not be understood by those outside of it.

Overall, words of art are important for professionals to communicate effectively within their field, but it's important to remember that not everyone may understand their meaning.

Gecko what's ur dream school
Hard to say. I'm pretty firmly committed to the philly area so probably temple or villanova
Also relatively debt averse so I'd have to get a good scholarship from BC or Fordham to want to go but that's not very likely for me
Any advice? lol

what’s a good scholarship for you? what would make BC or Fordham worth it?
12:25
Hmmmm let me think

12:25
fordham’s max aid they give is 45k per year
Bunny I can possibly get a 75%+ scholarship from villanova or temple, and I'd be moving back in with my parents if I went there so I'd have near-zero COL. It'd be really hard to beat that
I would prefer BC over Fordham just because I like boston more, but I'm expecting a WL there tbh
I would maybe consider BC with $ but I don't know how to decide if a better biglaw chance is worth the COL + higher tuition
