@atwatodbit: I mean this isn’t me personally, but I know my dad kinda cut his dad off because of a drinking + gambling problem—his dad is not white. And I’ve also never seen my dad drink so I’m assuming there’s def an impact.

also super white. and we’ve tried really hard to help him but he lies and hides things and there’s only so much you can do. he was still drinking while taking that medication that makes you nauseous if you drink alcohol. i’m sorry for your losses and it wasn’t your fault

Know it is not up to you and your decisions are your own to make, but his are not yours to make. I'm very sorry. I hope your father gets well soon - but if he does not, know that hiw decisions are not your fault or credit - you're your own person and you can take responsibility for only yourself. alcholism sucks but is a thoroughly familial disease. recognizing it is its own act of individual agency.

@dkk I don't hate myself or feel moral guilt over this stuff, but I do think its' just part of my life. lots of people in my life were totally destroyed by alcoholism and I guess that ways on me, whether I choose to drink or not. Just life dude! I don't think this is a strictly racial thing, I think this is a pretty human thing. but its up to you.
