Definition of antapocha
Antapocha
An antapocha is a historical legal term referring to a document signed by a person making a payment (the debtor) and given to the person receiving the payment (the creditor) as formal proof that the payment was made.
Unlike a standard receipt, which is typically issued by the creditor to the debtor, an antapocha originates from the debtor and serves as their declaration or acknowledgment of having fulfilled a financial obligation.
Example 1: Repaying a Personal Loan
Sarah borrowed money from her friend, Mark. When Sarah makes the final repayment, she drafts a simple note stating, "I, Sarah Miller, confirm that I have paid the final sum of $500 to Mark Johnson on October 26, 2023, settling my personal loan." Sarah signs this note and hands it to Mark. This document acts as an antapocha, providing Mark with Sarah's written acknowledgment that she has completed her payment obligation.
Example 2: Final Payment to a Contractor
A homeowner, Mr. Henderson, has hired a contractor, Ms. Davies, to renovate his kitchen. Upon making the final payment for the project, Mr. Henderson prepares a brief statement: "I, Robert Henderson, confirm that the final payment of $7,500 for the kitchen renovation project at 123 Oak Street was made to Davies Construction on November 15, 2023." Mr. Henderson signs this statement and gives it to Ms. Davies. This serves as an antapocha, providing the contractor with the homeowner's direct confirmation of payment received.
Example 3: Installment Payment for a Custom Order
Maria is purchasing a custom-designed piece of jewelry from a local artisan, Mr. Lee, and is paying in three installments. After making her third and final payment, Maria writes a short declaration: "This confirms that the final installment of $1,200 for the custom sapphire pendant was paid to Lee Fine Jewelry on December 1, 2023, completing the purchase." Maria signs this note and presents it to Mr. Lee. This document functions as an antapocha, giving Mr. Lee a formal record from Maria acknowledging her final payment.
Simple Definition
