An Administrative Patent Judge (APJ) is a specialized legal professional who serves on the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) within the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). APJs preside over administrative legal proceedings related to patent applications and the validity of granted patents. Their role involves interpreting patent law, evaluating evidence, conducting hearings, and issuing decisions on complex technical and legal disputes concerning intellectual property.

• Example 1: Challenging a Competitor's Patent

  Imagine "InnovateTech Inc." develops a new smartphone feature, only to find that "Global Devices Corp." recently received a patent for a very similar technology.
