An artisan's lien is a legal right that allows a skilled worker or craftsperson to keep possession of a customer's personal property until the customer pays for the labor and materials used to repair, improve, or create that specific item. It provides a form of security interest, meaning the worker has a claim on the property as collateral for the unpaid debt. This lien applies only to the particular item on which the work was performed.

  A customer takes a vintage watch to a watchmaker for a complex repair and cleaning. After the watchmaker completes the intricate work, the customer refuses to pay the agreed-upon fee, claiming the repair took too long. In this situation, the watchmaker can exercise an artisan's lien, legally holding onto the watch until the customer pays for the services rendered. The watchmaker performed skilled labor on the customer's personal property (the watch) and is entitled to payment before returning it.
