To controvert means to formally challenge, dispute, or deny a claim, statement, or piece of evidence, often by presenting opposing arguments or facts. It implies an active opposition to something that has been asserted, particularly in legal or formal settings.

• Imagine a situation where a landlord sues a tenant for property damage, claiming the tenant caused significant harm to the apartment. The tenant's lawyer would controvert these allegations by presenting evidence, such as photographs taken before and after their tenancy, or witness statements, to demonstrate that the damage either pre-existed or was normal wear and tear, thereby disputing the landlord's claims.

• Consider a government agency that issues a report concluding that a particular environmental regulation was violated by a manufacturing plant. The plant's legal team would then have the opportunity to controvert the agency's findings.
