LSDefine

Definition of debtee

The term "debtee" is an older, less commonly used word in legal and financial contexts. Today, the more prevalent and accurate term for the party to whom money is owed is a creditor. A creditor is essentially an individual or entity that is owed a debt by another party (the debtor). This debt can arise from various situations, such as lending money, providing goods or services on credit, or being awarded damages in a lawsuit. The creditor has a legal right to receive payment or fulfillment of the obligation from the debtor.

Examples:

  • Scenario: A Bank and a Home Loan
Imagine a couple, Sarah and Tom, take out a mortgage loan from "First National Bank" to purchase their new home. In this situation, First National Bank is the creditor (or, using the archaic term, the debtee) because Sarah and Tom owe the bank a significant sum of money, which they are repaying over many years with interest. The bank has provided the funds and expects regular payments in return.
  • Scenario: A Small Business Supplier
"Fresh Produce Wholesalers" regularly supplies fruits and vegetables to "The Corner Bistro" restaurant on a 30-day credit term. This means The Corner Bistro receives the produce now but has 30 days to pay the invoice. During that 30-day period, Fresh Produce Wholesalers is the creditor (or debtee) because The Corner Bistro owes them money for the goods already delivered. Fresh Produce Wholesalers has extended credit and is awaiting payment.
  • Scenario: A Utility Company
When you use electricity in your home throughout the month, your local power company, "City Power & Light," provides you with a service before you receive a bill. For the period between your electricity usage and the payment of your bill, City Power & Light is the creditor (or debtee). You owe them money for the energy you consumed, and they have the right to collect that payment according to their billing cycle.
