This status signifies that the debtor is officially in default of their commitment, often opening the door for the other party to pursue legal remedies.

• Construction Project Delay: Imagine a homeowner hires a contractor to build a new patio, with a contract specifying completion by August 1st. The contractor fails to complete the patio by this date. The homeowner then sends a formal written notice, demanding completion within an additional two weeks. If the contractor still fails to complete the work by the new deadline, they would be considered en demeure, meaning they are officially in default of their contractual obligation.
