Simple English definitions for legal terms

first-degree

Read a random definition: claim dilution

A quick definition of first-degree:

First-degree refers to a level of seriousness or guilt in a crime. It is the most serious level and can result in severe punishment. It can also refer to a step in a process or a level of intensity. In terms of family relationships, it is a measure of how closely related two people are. It is also a title given to someone who has completed their studies at a school or university.

A more thorough explanation:

First-degree is an adjective that describes a level of seriousness or classification. It can refer to:

  1. A measure of guilt or negligence in a crime, with first-degree being the most serious level. For example, murder in the first degree is premeditated and intentional.
  2. A stage in a process or a step in a series of steps towards an end. For example, a statute may go through several degrees of development before becoming law.
  3. A level of intensity or skill. For example, a high degree of legal skill is required for certain cases.
  4. A measure of blood or marital relationship in the line of descent. For example, a council member may not participate in a vote if they are related to one of the bidders within the first degree of consanguinity.
  5. A title conferred on a graduate of a school, college, or university, either after the completion of required studies or in honor of special achievements. For example, someone who receives a law degree can begin studying for the bar exam.

For example, if someone is charged with murder in the first degree, it means they intentionally planned and carried out the killing. Another example is if a student receives a degree in engineering, it means they have completed the required studies and earned a title in that field.

I mean, idk how it's possible to end birth right citizenship without amending the constitution because to me the 14th amendment is pretty clear about it.
ross ulbricht tried to hire a hitman to kill 5 people
i am not that sympathetic to him

@KnowledgeableRitzyWasp: That might have been an FBI agent. It was most likely him and he was most likely doing it to retrieve stolen funds that corrupt FBI agents stole, but yeah moral gray area but me personally, cool with hitmen. It's not like it is uncommon to hire hitmen. I don't think the action itself is necessarily wrong but the intent behind it can be.

Like, Boeing whistblowers being killed by hitmen = wrong but a guy hiring hitmen to retrieve stolen funds = good to me.

@Dkk: Yeah, for sure. My guess is it'll go to SCOTUS and it'll be 8-1 or 7-2, saying that EO was unconstitutional.

Indeed. I need a count for how many exectuive orders he has signed and how many already have pending lawsuits.
