Term: Guarantor
Definition: A person who promises to defend the ownership of land that has been sold to someone else. If the new owner is forced to leave the land, the guarantor must provide them with another piece of land that is worth the same amount.
Definition: A garauntor (gar-uhn-tuhr) is a person who guarantees the title and ownership of a piece of land to someone else. In the past, this term was used in Law French.
For example, if someone bought a piece of land from another person, the garauntor would be responsible for defending the buyer's ownership of the land. If the buyer was ever forced to give up the land, the garauntor would have to provide the buyer with another piece of land that was worth the same amount.
This term is not commonly used today, but it was an important part of property law in the past.
