In ancient Roman law, ingenuitas referred to the legal status of being a free-born person. This meant an individual had never been enslaved at any point in their life, distinguishing them from those who had been freed from slavery (known as freedmen or liberti).

This status conferred specific rights and social standing within Roman society, often seen as a more esteemed form of freedom compared to that of a freedman.

• Example 1: A child born to two Roman citizens, both of whom were themselves born free. This child would automatically possess ingenuitas from birth, granting them the full rights and social recognition associated with being free-born, regardless of their family's wealth or political influence.

• Example 2: Consider a Roman citizen named Lucius, whose family lineage could be traced back several generations, with all his ancestors having been free individuals. Even if Lucius himself was a modest farmer with no significant property or political power, he would still hold the status of ingenuitas because his birthright was freedom, setting him apart from someone who might have gained wealth after being freed from slavery.

• Example 3: A woman named Julia was born into slavery but was later granted her freedom by her owner through a legal act of manumission. While Julia is now a free person, her legal status would be that of a "freedwoman" (liberta), not ingenuitas. This illustrates that while she is no longer enslaved, she was not *born* free, and therefore did not possess ingenuitas, though her children born after her manumission would.
