Simple English definitions for legal terms

initial appearance

Read a random definition: income approach

A quick definition of initial appearance:

An initial appearance is when someone who has been arrested or charged with a crime goes to court for the first time. The judge tells them what they are being charged with and may decide if they can leave jail by paying bail. The defendant also learns about their rights and gets a lawyer to help them in court. The goal of the initial appearance is to make sure the defendant understands what is happening and has the help they need to go through the legal process.

A more thorough explanation:

An initial appearance is a court hearing where a person who has been arrested or charged with a crime is brought before a judge for the first time. The purpose of this hearing is to inform the defendant of the charges against them and to ensure that they understand their rights. The judge may also set bail, appoint an attorney, or schedule future court dates.

John was arrested for shoplifting and was taken to court for his initial appearance. The judge informed him of the charges against him and asked if he understood his rights. The judge also set bail and scheduled a future court date for John's trial.

Another example could be a person who is charged with a DUI and is brought before a judge for their initial appearance. The judge would inform them of the charges, set bail, and schedule a future court date.

These examples illustrate how an initial appearance is a crucial step in the legal process. It ensures that the defendant understands the charges against them and their rights, and it allows the judge to make important decisions regarding bail and legal representation.

I mean, idk how it's possible to end birth right citizenship without amending the constitution because to me the 14th amendment is pretty clear about it.
ross ulbricht tried to hire a hitman to kill 5 people
i am not that sympathetic to him

@KnowledgeableRitzyWasp: That might have been an FBI agent. It was most likely him and he was most likely doing it to retrieve stolen funds that corrupt FBI agents stole, but yeah moral gray area but me personally, cool with hitmen. It's not like it is uncommon to hire hitmen. I don't think the action itself is necessarily wrong but the intent behind it can be.

Like, Boeing whistblowers being killed by hitmen = wrong but a guy hiring hitmen to retrieve stolen funds = good to me.

@Dkk: Yeah, for sure. My guess is it'll go to SCOTUS and it'll be 8-1 or 7-2, saying that EO was unconstitutional.

Indeed. I need a count for how many exectuive orders he has signed and how many already have pending lawsuits.
